Beauty On A Budget – Haircare Solutions From Your Kitchen

Dry shampoo:

If you don’t have time to wash, dry and style, and just have some oily roots that you don’t want to hide in a ponytail, try one of these:

Baby powder

Corn starch

Stand in your shower or bathtub before you get dressed (it can be a bit messy). Shake some powder into you part, re-part about two inches down and shake some powder into it. Try to do the whole crown of your head like this. Then run a comb or brush through your hair. Boar bristle brushes are particularly good. If you have darker hair you may need to comb/brush for a few minutes so you can get all the powder out. The powder will soak up the oil and can help give a little body to your hair.

Shinier hair:

Combine 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts cold water. After you shampoo and rinse, use the mixture as a rinse (I recommend flipping your head forward so that you don’t get the cold rinse down your back!). The rinse with the coldest water you can stand.

More body!:

This one is weird, but it works! Following the directs above for shinier hair, use half a can of flat beer instead of the apple cider vinegar mixture. Brand and type don’t matter. Don’t worry – it smells of beer in the shower, but after you rinse, the smell will go away and you won’t smell like you partied all night!

Moisturizing masks:

Take any of the following or a combination:

1/2 cup olive oil

1/2 cup mayo

1/2 avocado mashed up

Comb into damp hair (can be dirty). Put on a shower cap or use a plastic shopping bag or plastic wrap to cover your hair. Soak a towel in the hottest water you can stand, wring it out and wrap it around your head turban style. When the towel cools, unwrap your hair and shampoo well. Condition if you want, but you may not need it.
